Dr. Gerald Malanga

Dr. Malanga is the Founder and Partner of New Jersey Sports Medicine, LLC and New Jersey Regenerative Institute in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey. He has served as Director of Pain Management at Overlook hospital and Director of Research of Atlantic Sports Health. He is Board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine and Pain Medicine. He completed a sports medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. and served as Senior Associate Consultant at Mayo Clinic from 1993-1996 and Director of Sport, Spine and Orthopedic Rehabilitation and Fellowship director at Kessler Institute from 1997-2004.


DR. Malanga has provided sport medicine services to several local NJ high school and colleges and has served as the head team physician of New Jersey City University since 1999. He also served as a consultant to the Rutgers University Athletic Department and the NY Jets professional football team. His practice includes the treatment of recreational to Olympic and Professional level athletes.


Dr. Malanga has expertise in the nonoperative treatment of a variety of orthopedic disorders including neck and back pain as well as shoulder, knee, and other sport medicine and musculoskeletal problems. His expertise includes EMG testing; spinal and joint injections, musculoskeletal ultrasound and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and bone marrow and adipose-derived stem cell treatments.

Dr. Malanga has published four textbooks: “Whiplash” and “Scientific Evidence of Musculoskeletal Physical Examination” Atlas of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound-guided Injection Procedures and “Regenerative Treatments in Sports and Orthopedic Medicine” published in 2017. He has published over 70 articles and 25 book chapters regarding various musculoskeletal issues from the treatment of neck and back pain to Ultrasound procedures and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) and stem cell therapies. He has lectured throughout the country and abroad on a variety of sports medicine, spine, orthopedic and Regenerative Medicine topics.


Dr. Malanga is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pain Medicine and Sports Medicine and a Diplomat of the American College of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine; and American Board of Regenerative Medicine and Fellow of American Academy of Regenerative Medicine.


He is a member of the American Academy of PM&R; Interventional Orthopedic Foundation (IOF) American Academy of Regenerative Medicine ; International Spinal injection Society (ISIS);International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS); American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM) and the American Pain Society. He has been a member of the Physiatric Association of Sports Spine and Occupational Rehabilitation (PASSOR) board serving in many positions in the past and presented the “PASSOR Legacy Award” in 2012. He has been Chair of the AAPM&R’s Regenerative Task Force. He was selected to the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Regenerative Medicine and the American Board of Regenerative Medicine. He is the current president and board member of the Interventional Orthopedic Foundation (IOF).


Dr. Malanga has been selected as a member of the Physician honor society “Apha Omega Alpha” in 2004.He has been chosen “Top Doctor” in the New York Metro Area; “NJ Monthly” Best Doctors in New Jersey,” Inside Jersey” Best Doctors, “New York Magazine” Best Doctors; and Best Doctors in America multiple times since 2004.
